Support our Fight against Puppy mills
Hannah was found by one of our officers during a raid of a local dog breeder in November of 2007. They were horrified by the lack of water due to a broken watering system, the feces mixed in with the food, and the poor dogs covered with bite wounds. Hannah herself was but a baby, at not even a year old. She and her puppy were taken by our officers, but many dogs were left behind because there was insufficient medical cause to take them. Ervin Zimmerman, the owner of the dogs, has faced cruelty charges going back to 2003. He has still been running a kennel with hundreds of dogs despite being found guilty. Now the Humane League is housing Hannah, her puppy, and sixteen other dogs. They are all being held as evidence in the cruelty case against him, and cannot be placed for adoption. The shelter is paying for all of their medical needs, food, housing, vaccinations, as well as toys and blankets.
When Hannah came into the shelter she was too shy to even be touched, and was like a ghost of a dog hiding in the corner of her cage. She has spent the past few months being socialized in the Administrative Offices, where she has learned about treats, playing with other dogs, and snuggling with her favorite people. Her puppy has been in foster care with the officer who found him, and he is a happy puppy who loves to play with his human and animal siblings.
The Humane League of Lancaster County receives no government assistance with legal fees, or with the costs of caring for these dogs for what may well become several years as the case winds its way through the courts.
The time has come for Lancaster County to shed its reputation as the Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast, and we are fighting hand in hand with the Bureau of Dog Law and other agencies to end this tragic practice in our area. We need your help. Your donation will help us prosecute puppy mill agencies and care for the canine victims of these mills.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Overview
The Humane League offers many opportunities for interested
individuals to gain experience working with animals, learn
more about animal welfare issues, and work with other animal
lovers to improve the lives of animals in our community. Volunteers
can work directly with the animals, or support the work of
the shelter through raising money, educating the public, or
providing administrative assistance. Due to the generously
donated time and assistance of volunteers the shelter can
offer many high quality programs and services to Lancaster
County pets and residents.
The Behavioral Assistance and Rehabilitation Club (BARC) -
The BARC program is designed to teach volunteers how to effectively interact with the dogs in the kennels in order to improve their chances for adoption, as well as reduce stress levels. Dogs that are calmer have a better chance of finding a permanent home because they can cope better with the stress and anxiety inherent in shelter life. The BARC program will also help to give staff a better idea of each individual dog's behavior in order to provide more information to adopters. Finally, by instilling some basic obedience commands, the goal is to help them transition into their new homes with less stress for both the dogs and the owners. To join this program individuals must have completed the direct animal care training, 10 hours of volunteer service, and must attend the BARC classes to complete the training and become a part of the program. BARC training will be held
Saturday, Sept. 29, 10am-4pm. To sign up please contact Miranda Troccoli
Direct Animal Care (Animal
Care Technician Assistant) -
Working directly with the animals requires successful completion
of training in kennel procedures and animal handling.
Fundraising Volunteers –
Meet new people and have fun helping a great cause! Throughout
the year, the Humane League of Lancaster County holds four
major fundraising events to support our mission. Volunteers
are needed for many things! You can join one of the committees
and volunteer your professional and personal skills to better
plan, promote, and expand an event. We also need good “worker
bees” to make pick ups/deliveries and volunteer time
on the day of an event. Whatever your interests, we can find
a place for YOU!
Friends for Spay/Neuter -
This group is dedicated to promoting spaying and neutering
as the primary means of overpopulation control. Volunteers
attend various community events to sell merchandise to support these programs.
Educational Programs - (More)
Our Humane Educator, Megan Gallagher Clark, has opportunities for volunteers
to help her with programs that she brings to groups around
the area. She needs creative people to help her make educational
bulletin boards, and make presentations to small groups. Please
contact Megan at 393-6551, ext. 233 or Email.
We are currently recruiting Community Outreach Volunteers! Please contact Megan Gallagher Clark to apply!
Foster Care - (More) (Photos)
Foster Parents offer short-term and long-term care to animals
who are unable to be immediately placed for adoption. By providing
care to injured, sick, or neonatal animals, Foster Parents
make it possible for these animals to be adopted. This program
is headed by Lori Kelley Email: lkelley@humaneleague.com.
+Please note, you must be 16yrs old to volunteer alone, children
12yrs old to 15yrs old may volunteer but must be accompanied
