The Humane League of Lancaster
County is an open admission shelter, and we accept all domesticated
animals brought to our facility regardless of our ability
to place the individual animal. The animals are either surrendered
by their owner, found wandering as a stray, or were taken
from their owners as part of a cruelty investigation. All
stray dogs are held 72 hours before being made available for
adoption, and longer if the dog has identification. State
law requires that all stray dogs be held 48 hours prior to
being made available for adoption. There is no required holding
period for stray cats who enter the shelter without identification.
Owned surrender animals and dogs who are not reclaimed by
their owners are assessed for temperament and personality
by our staff through the Placement Assessment Test and made
available for adoption if they are determined to be healthy
and demonstrate no aggression. Every animal adopted from our
facility must be spayed or neutered to help prevent pet overpopulation
and microchipped to ensure a safe trip home should they ever
become lost.
The Humane League of Lancaster County received almost 12,500
cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, hamsters, rats and reptiles during
2006. This number represents a 3% increase over the number
of animals received in 2005 and a 47% increase over the number received in 2000! In particular,
with the opening of our Cat Adoption Center in the summer
of 2001, we have been able to accommodate more feline residents,
and experienced a 48% increase in their numbers over the last six years.
